Organizing the Living Room: The Camilla Way

It only takes four simple Steps to guide every organization, no matter how big or small the project may seem.

We all come from different walks of life, operate in our own unique ways, and have our own ideas of what we consider to be “clean.” Our living spaces are a reflection of who we are. Right down to those quirky decor choices or random piles of stuff that seem to accumulate overnight. But no matter how different we might be, there’s one universal truth most of us share: the dreaded junk drawer that lives rent-free in our nightmares.

“The Camilla Way” Step-by-Step Strategy

  1. Goals & Visual

First, start by envisioning what you want from the space. Do you see yourself relaxing in a bright, airy area or hosting friends for cozy get-togethers? Define your goals and keep this mental image in mind throughout the process. What do you want your living room to feel like as you walk by or enter it to kick back and relax?  For this process, it is helpful to take out a piece of paper and jot your thoughts. 2.  Sort & Edit

Begin in a small area, like one shelf or a coffee table. Remove everything, then separate items into Keep, Donate, Sell, or Throw Away piles. Anything you truly love or use regularly goes in the “Keep” stack. If something is still in good shape but no longer matches your style, consider donating it or selling it for a little extra cash. Items that are beyond repair or simply worn out can be tossed or recycled if possible. Editing out what no longer serves you frees up space for what does, like the cozy blanket you reach for or the new spring outfit you’ve been eyeing. Plus, when you focus on just one small spot at a time, it’s easier to see real progress, stay motivated, and keep the entire process from feeling overwhelming..

3. Categorize & Create a Shopping List

Group similar items together, such as books in one category, electronics in another, and so on. If you notice that you need better storage (like bins, baskets, or shelving), write it down on your shopping list. Creating a list while you categorize is the perfect way to identify what you are missing. It helps save you time at the store when you are attempting to remember what items you are missing. Help your future self and create a list!

4. Organize

Give each category a proper “home.” Keep your most-used items, like remote controls and magazines, easy to see and access. Hide away items you don’t use as often in order to create a cleaner look. As you put everything in place, you get to do my favorite step, which is decorating! Enjoy adding your personal touch to the space, whether its a pop of color on the couches or a fun action figure on the coffee table, this blank canvas is yours to play with.
